Thanks for your comments - I haven't read Pamuk's SNOW yet, although it is on my shelf and my spouse has encouraged me to read it many times.

For me, as a reader with an academic background in postcolonial and feminist studies (among other things), I think that I am prone to being hyper aware of how race and gender get played out in Western narratives.
